Bouwknecht signed with the first team of GasTerra Flames youth team in the summer of 2013. He won the Dutch Basketball League (DBL) championship and the NBB Cup in 2014.
On 23 June 2015 Maarten signed a three-year deal with Den Bosch and was named DBL MVP Under 23 in his first year.
In 2019, Bouwknecht signed with the BBL’s Worcester Wolves and won the BBL Cup. In July of this year, he returned to the Netherlands signing a one-year contract with ZZ Leiden.
